About Total Traction
The story behind the app
Why Total Traction?
Total Traction was born from a simple observation: most drivers don't understand how close they are to their vehicle's traction limits. Apps exist that show raw G-forces, but those numbers are meaningless without context. Is 0.7g safe? It depends on whether you're on dry pavement or ice.
The idea was to create something better—an app that shows traction as a percentage of what's actually available. Something that accounts for road conditions, vehicle dynamics, and physics. Something that helps drivers learn and improve, not just display numbers.
The breakthrough came with Training Mode. By setting the app to "Ice" mode on dry roads, drivers can practice the smooth, gentle inputs needed for low-traction conditions without any actual risk. It's like a flight simulator for winter driving.
Our Mission
To help drivers of all skill levels understand vehicle dynamics, improve their driving smoothness, and stay safe in all conditions through real-time feedback and effective training tools.
Our Vision
A world where every driver understands their vehicle's capabilities and limits, leading to safer roads, smoother driving, and more confident winter weather navigation.
Our Principles
Privacy First
No data collection. No analytics. No tracking. Everything stays on your device.
Physics-Based
Real vehicle dynamics, not simplified approximations. We respect the science.
Safety Focused
Designed as a training and awareness tool, not to encourage risky behavior.
No Subscriptions
One price, all features, forever. No hidden costs or recurring charges.
Accessibility
Works without GPS or internet. Available to everyone with an iPhone.
Continuous Improvement
We listen to feedback and regularly improve the app based on real-world use.
Technical Implementation
Total Traction is built entirely in Swift/SwiftUI, leveraging:
- CoreMotion Framework: For high-frequency accelerometer data acquisition
- AVAudioEngine: For real-time audio feedback generation
- SwiftUI: For smooth, responsive user interface
- Advanced Vector Mathematics: For force decomposition and traction calculations
The app processes accelerometer data at 60 Hz, performing complex vector calculations to separate gravity from lateral forces, compensate for road geometry, and provide meaningful percentage-based feedback—all in real-time with minimal battery impact.
